The dust has settled on yet another fantastic CrossFit Open. CrossFit Leyland set a new PR, with 94 of our members signing up to take part in the fun and games and push themselves to their respective limits. It was a testing five weeks, with a few curve balls (in the shape of dumbbells) thrown in for good measure, but everyone did amazing! (PS – thanks to everyone who loaned the gym their dumbbells!)

Although the open concluded for many at the end of the five weeks, the top athletes in the world are still preparing for the next step on the way to the CrossFit Games, the regional competitions. The men and women who finished in the top thirty in Europe, will go on to compete against each other in the Meridian regional (Europe & Africa). This is set to take place June 2nd – 4th in the Spanish capital, Madrid. Many of you will no doubt be following the progress of the fittest in the region online, with a close eye on which athletes qualify for the CrossFit Games, set to take place August 1st – 6th in Wisconsin, USA.

Every year we nominate one member for the ‘Spirit of the Open’ award and one member for the ‘Progress Award’. This year we have also added an ‘Outstanding Achievement Award’, for obvious reasons!

The 2017 CrossFit Leyland Open awards go to ….

Spirit of the Open Award – Dan Mulhearn

Progress Award – Laura Simpson

Outstanding Achievement Award – Cathy Wilson

Dan – Spirit of the open Award

This was Dan’s first year of competing in the teenage category. He was the only male teen in the category from our gym.

Dan scaled all 5 workouts and was pushed to his limits. His mental toughness and the way he approached every workout was amazing. Despite being sick during 17.1 & 17.5 his determination to finish the workout continued and he never quit.

His grit and determination got him to the end of each work and even to finish 17.5 in a time of 32:42 –  FANTASTIC!!!

He is a great example to other teens who will be able to do the workouts in the future! No ego, just hard work and determination.

Laura – Progress Award

Following a long and stressful period of health issues this has been the first year Laura has been able to fully take part in the open after 3 years as a member. Laura’s goal was to Rx some of the workouts, but with sheer determination she posted an Rx score for each workout. She had a goal and she smashed it!!

In addition to this, she also hit many personal bests during the open, performing; pull ups, t2b and chest to bar for the first time throughout the 5 workouts.

Well done Laura!

Cathy – Outstanding Achievement Award

I can’t imagine that any of our members are unaware of Cathy’s achievement in this years Open! Twelve months ago, Team Wilson set an ambitious, but clearly realistic goal, to qualify for the CrossFit Games. She put tremendous pressure on herself to achieve this goal, trained like a machine, overcoming injuries along the way and achieved her goal!

Cathy finished the open in 33rd position out of around 10,000 athletes in her category. The top 200  qualified to take part in the worldwide online qualifiers for the Crossfit games, which this year replaced the Regionals for the masters categories. She managed two top 10 finishes in the qualifiers and finished 14th(worldwide) overall, with only the top 20 qualifying for the CrossFit Games!

Cathy is the only CFL member to make it all the way to the CrossFit Games, a truly outstanding achievement! All of our coaches and members wish you all the best for the games!

Great work everyone! Remember, the road to the 2018 CrossFit Open starts now!
