2017 is well under way and the gym has been a hive of activity lately with various courses, events, workshops, competition qualifiers and of course the start of the open! It’s not likely to quieten down anytime soon either! Lots to look forward to at CrossFit Leyland this year!
New year goals
We always encourage our members to set goals to work towards in the gym, goal setting really helps with motivation levels and monitoring progress and improvements. Your goals should always be personal to you and there are a few tried and tested rules that you should follow to improve your chances of success. See the blog we published in January: http://www.crossfitleyland.co.uk/smart-goal-setting/
Coach Development Programme
Following the success of our inaugural coach development programme, you may see some familiar faces assisting coaches in the classes. Several of our graduates have all been adding to their experience by helping out in the CrossFit, Weightlifting and Couch to CrossFit classes. It’s great to see so many members keen to develop their skills under the mentorship of the CFL coaching team.
New Members
We would like to welcome new members to the CFL team! We have had quite a few people join at the end of 2016 and start of 2017, we’re sure you’ll settle right in and be hooked on CrossFit in no time. If you see any new faces please make them feel welcome.
Competitions
Battle of Britain
Huge congratulations to CFL members Christian and Cathy Wilson (aka OMW and OWW!) who have qualified for the Battle of Britain, one of the toughest CrossFit competitions in the UK. The event will take place on 23rd April 2017 at Birmingham International Futsal Arena. Mark your diaries! Well done Team Wilson!!!!
Rainhill Trials
The “Rainhill Trials” is a CrossFit competition organised by TRAIN Manchester and INOV-8. Like competitive running events, the event is banded into categories from Beginners to Elite Athletes. The appropriately named Rocket targeting elite athletes, Kennedy next, then Rastrick and Wood focusing on beginner athletes. We had several members compete in the february competition last weekend.
Well done to the following CFL members who competed;
Saturday – Natalie Martin, Carly Falcon, Mark Kiernan, James McDuff and Mike Hailwood
Sunday – Chris Lowden, Josh Carter, Brent Holland, Phil Thomas and Andrew Hounsell
This has been a really popular competition with our members over the past few years and really well supported by other CFL members spectating. Bring on the spring trials!
CFL Masters Competition
We will be hosting our 2nd annual Masters Competition on 2nd April 2017. The competition will be a same sex paired competition for athletes 40 years or above. After the success of last year’s competition, we’re sure this will prove to be a really popular event. There are limited places available, so get in touch early to reserve your place. If you don’t currently have a partner, but are interested in competing, we can add you to a list of people in the same boat and help to pair people up. The competition will be open to both members and non-members.
All Star Games – members only competition
We are really excited to announce our 3rd annual in house competition, the CFL All Star Games, which will take place on 22nd April 2017. This competition is only open to members of CrossFit Leyland, and is a great opportunity to put your fitness to the test and push outside of your comfort zone. There are both RX and scaled categories, so whether you have never competed before, or if you compete on a regular basis, there is something for everyone. Not forgetting the CrossFit kids category also! The little guys have made a tonne of improvement over the past year, so it will be exciting to see them compete and have the parents cheering them on.
The previous two years have been a great success and the atmosphere will no doubt be electric as always. We have several generous sponsors that always provide some nice prizes for the podium finishers, so something to work hard for!
The CrossFit Open
The open is far more than just a competition, it embodies everything that is CrossFit, bringing together members in boxes all around the world to support one another. During the 5 weeks from 23rd February to 27th March 2017, ‘Open Fever’ will be in full effect at CrossFit Leyland!
We currently have over 80 members signed up and its still not to late to sign up! We recently published a blog on what the open entails, you can read more about it here: http://www.crossfitleyland.co.uk/crossfit-games-open/
The open workouts will take place in all the Friday classes and on a Saturday morning at CFL, giving members plenty of chance to register a score. Even if you are not signed up for the open and want to attend a Friday or Saturday class, you will still do a version of the open workout for that week, you just wont need to submit a score. PS – why are you not signed up for the open! With RX, scaled, masters and kids categories, the open is designed for everyone to take part!
Please note the following change in class times during the open:
Saturday 9 am – CrossFit Kids
10am – Adults (open workout heats) + Including any kids doing the open
Workshops
CFL Gymnastics
We recently held our first gymnastics workshop at CrossFit Leyland, delivered by Gary and Matt, who have both been on the CrossFit gymnastics course and are well versed in helping people progress in the selected movements. The workshop was well received by members and we plan to run another in the same format later in the year (26th – 27th August) for those who couldn’t make the February one, or anyone who wants to do it again.
CFL Olympic Weightlifting
The weightlifting workshops will follow a similar format to the gymnastics, with intermediates being on one day and beginners following on the next day. This is a great opportunity to refine your techniques over an extended period of time.
The Weightlifting workshops will take place on 13th / 14th May 2017, Keep your eyes peeled for the registration opening as their will be limited places available.
Personal Training
If you are unable to make the above workshop, but would really like some extra support in progressing in gymnastic movements, or even working towards other goals (e.g. strength development, weightlifting technique, mobility, fat loss etc.), several of our coaches are available for personal training. Either message the CrossFit Leyland page on facebook, or email marie@crossfitleyland.co.uk to enquire about availability and prices.
Sports Massage / Physiotherapy
As always, we have a fantastic medical team at our disposal. Whether it be to keep on top of muscular tightness that develops with regular training, or to check out any niggles you have, its always useful to check yourself in for an MOT. Get in touch to book your appointment!
Keep up the great work guys and have a blast in the open!
