As we approach the end of 2016, many of you will be reflecting on your goals from the past year and about to set your targets for 2017. It really helps with self-motivation to have a reason, or purpose to get fit, particularly during the colder winter months. So why not set yourself a fitness related challenge for the coming year, however big or small you deem necessary to get you off the couch? Granted, the majority of people won’t be quite as adventurous as Janet and Susan, two of our members from CrossFit Leyland, who have been working hard on their fitness over the past year for a specific reason…
“In June 2017 we are embarking on a four day trek along the Inca Trail. This is a walk of approx 50km which will take us to heights of 4200m – slightly higher than Leyland!!
We will cross rivers and valleys and trek through ‘Dead Woman’s Pass’ (hopefully not). We will experience both rain and cloud forest and beautiful river crossings. On the final day we will arrive at the ‘Sun Gates’ at Maccu Picchu.
This is a major expedition for both of us. We have done a lot of walking over the years, but hill walking (and camping) has not always been our forte. So this is where Cross Fit comes in – we need to be fitter, stronger and build up our stamina for this expedition. The average days climbing is 5 hours, but on the second day as we cross ‘Dead Woman’s Pass’, it will take approximately 8 hours.
The altitude will play a big part in our experience and no amount of training can prepare us for this, but we are hoping that our improved fitness will help us on our journey. CrossFit has been something of a ‘Eureka Moment’ for both of us. Having tried and failed many exercise classes and joined gyms that we have never been to, this journey has continued now for 18 months. And WE LOVE IT!! The camaraderie and support make each visit a pleasure (eventually) and we feel fitter, stronger and generally better about ourselves. The training team are ‘simply the best’. They make us feel valued, always push us slightly further than we think we can go, but never too far.
So we will continue our 3 times a week visits – more air squats, sit ups, running and whatever else is thrown at us – and who knows what the future holds – Everest maybe!!”
Good luck ladies!
