Hi Guys, hope you are all having a great summer and are all on your way to achieving your 2016 goals.
So much has happened over the last 3 months here at CrossFit Leyland and there is even more coming up so please take a read of our round up and see what exciting things we have planned for the rest of the year.
Competitions:
All Star Games
On Saturday (23rd April), CrossFit Leyland hosted the second annual All Star Games, our in-house competition. The event was once again a huge success!
There was a fantastic turnout on the day, with outstanding efforts from all those participating, judging and spectating /cheering. Events like this really highlight the community spirit in our gym and the desire of our members to strive for self-improvement, whilst having fun.
There was plenty of friendly competition in both the scaled and Rx categories. It was also great to see the CrossFit Leyland Kids take part in their first competition.
The 2017 All Star Games will be held over the same weekend (22nd April 2017) and will no doubt be bigger and better, so mark your diaries now!
We would like to say a huge thank you to our sponsors for the fabulous prizes; Rawnola, Icon Nutrition, RockTape, Subway / Spar (Hunts, Lostock Hall) and CFL therapists.
Rainhills.
The “Rainhill Trials” is a CrossFit competition organised by TRAIN Manchester and INOV-8. Like competitive running events, the event is banded into categories from Beginners to Elite Athletes. The appropriately named Rocket targeting elite athletes, Kennedy next, then Rastrick and Wood focusing on beginner athletes.
The next Rainhill competitions are being held on the following dates and we have a number of athletes competing.
Rainhills Summer – August 20th/21st 2016
Rainhills Autumn – October 15th/16th 2016
Rainhills Winter – February 18th/19th 2017
In May we saw a number of our members compete at the Rainhill Trials in various categories. The athletes had to complete 4 gruelling workouts in a day and 5 if you reached the final.
Dave Maloney made the final and finished in 2nd place in the wood category, Andrew Hounsell finished 4th in the Rastrick category and our coach Chris Lowden finished 9th in the Kennedy Category.
Marie Lowden and Erann Royle battled hard in Rocket as did Karis Higson and Sally Thompson in Kennedy. For our member Natalie Martin this was her first CrossFit competition and she showed great form and technique throughout her performance in the wood category.
It was great to see so many of our members come down to support our athletes over the weekend and we hope you will join us to support our members who are competing at the Summer, Autumn and Winter Trials.
Battle of Britain
The Battle of Britain Throwdown is an individual athlete’s competition to be held at The Birmingham International Futsal Arena which took place on 17th April 2016.
Our coaches, Gina and Gary and members Cathy & Christian qualified in the top 60 and went down to compete for the title. Unfortunately Gina had to pull out the competition due to an arm injury but the other 3 battled on. Each of them gave a fantastic performance with some great PB’s made on the day.
We are extremely pleased to say that Cathy took the ladies master’s title and won the competition and Christian and Gary impressively both finished in the top 20.
Summer Partner Throwdown
On Sunday 3rd July we will be hosting our very own CrossFit Leyland Summer Partner Throwdown. This will be at a cost of £5pp.
For those competing at European Inferno this is a great opportunity to pair up with your partner and get some practice in or just a great opportunity for those who want to experience competing in the comfort of our own gym surrounded by friends .
Sign-up sheet is on the mezzanine & if you don’t have a partner don’t worry pop your name down anyway & we will pair you up.
European Inferno
European Inferno is a same sex pair’s competition that has been created to, establish a unique fun and competitive fitness challenge, for people from all backgrounds of fitness training to test themselves against their peers.
It is being held at the National Indoor Athletics centre in Cardiff on the 7/8 August and we have a number of pairs going down to compete.
We have done this competition 3 years running now and it is a fantastic weekend. If you would like to come down watch and support your fellow members competing in the biggest fitness competition in Europe, it is £10 for the weekend, U16 free with parent or guardian. Please see link below.

Whether you simply love competing, you are looking for new goals, new targets or simply as pre-season preparation; European inferno will be an opportunity to Make Your Mark.
Here are some pictures from inferno last year:
Raising the Bar
The original all-inclusive event for Crossfit Masters. Now into their fifth year, Raising the Bar is the only competition of its kind in Europe aimed specifically at athletes aged 40 and over.
The competition was held over 2 days (11 and 12 June) at Reebok CrossFit 3D, in Trafford Park, Manchester. The specific age categories are: 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-60 and for the first time a 60+ category, AMAZING, all workouts were scaled for each age category and as ever it promises to be challenging for all.
Coach Gary Stephenson and members Cathy Wilson and Ian Billsborough went down to compete. All 3 athletes performed well and achieved their goals for the weekend with Ian showing great improvement and finishing in a higher position than last year, Gary reaching the final and finishing in 6th place and Cathy who went on to win the competition.
Well done guys!!

Tough Mudder
Date: Sunday September 11th
Summer is on the way, making outdoor training much more fun! If you want to inject a bit more variety and fun into your existing training, you can’t go wrong with entering an adventure race.
This will be the 3rd Tough Mudder race in which we have entered a team. In previous years we have had 20+ team members, making the training sessions and the event good fun. Tough Mudder is more expensive than other adventure races, but the organisation is excellent and courses / obstacles are well thought out.
If you have never done anything like this, or even ran anywhere near the distance involved, do not worry! Our training sessions will give you the confidence to complete the event. In previous years we have had team members who had never ran further than a mile prior to the training camp, go on to complete the event with the rest of the team.
This year, our TM training camp will run for 8 weeks, with sessions on a Sunday morning (10:00 am) and a Wednesday evening (5:30 pm), starting Sunday 17th July. The outdoor sessions will change location each week, taking in country parks, woodlands, marshlands and even the sand-dunes in the local countryside.
The main emphasis of the sessions will be on running over varied terrains, with some fun obstacles thrown in for good measure. These sessions will give you the confidence to take on the 16-20 km and 20+ obstacles, as well as giving you a chance to get to know your team mates.
Training sessions will be open to both non-members and members of CrossFit Leyland.

Changes to Open Gym
Due to insurance purposes we will now be offering supervised open gym sessions in the main gym. This will give you the opportunity to catch up on a workout or work on weaknesses etc under the watchful eye of one of the coaches. The open gym room will still be available however this will not be supervised and as such you will be training in there at your own risk. In the open gym room workshops, personal training and courses will take priority. There is now a whiteboard in the corridor just before the entrance to the open gym room and from the 29th June it will state the days and times that the open gym room is out of use each week. Please make sure you check the whiteboard at the start of each week if you intend to use the open gym room to check availability.

- The 6.15am class will now start at 6am on the same days to allow for this change.
- On Fridays the gym will now be open the following hours: 6am-11am & 2-7.30pm
Personal Training
We still have a few slots available if anyone is interested? This can focus upon any element that you feel you need to work on (Olympic Weightlifting, CrossFit, Gymnastics, Kettlebells. Mobility etc). We have seen great improvements in those who have chosen this route due to the 1:1 attention they receive.
Physiotherapy/Sports Massage
Massages don’t just feel great, they also provide excellent recovery assistance for CrossFit athletes.
Getting a regular massage once a month or more can help you reduce soreness and risk of injury while increasing mobility so you can perform better.
During high intensity exercise, lactic acid and general toxins from acidity increase in your muscles. Your body can naturally clear lactic acid and toxins with time and rest, however massage can help expedite the process, especially when you are working out often.
Other benefits of massage include:
- Massage lengthens fascia and muscle easing it back into place. This increases range of motion and has the added benefit of making your muscles look more toned.
- Increases blood flow and circulation getting more oxygen into your body.
- Decreases and anxiety and stress.
- Helps reduce pain and inflammation in the joints, tendons, nerves and bones.
We have available a variety of specialisms for you:
Emma Hunter – Sports Therapy (available Mondays)
Christine Potter – Physiotherapist (available Tuesday evenings)
Alan Watamough – Sports Massage (available Thursday evenings every 2 weeks)
Feedback
We really value your feedback (positive or negative). This is really important to help us improve and develop, so please don’t be shy, our office door is always open. Remember we have suggestions boxes scattered around the gym if you would prefer your suggestion to be anonymous.
