Name: Neil Ashton
Been doing CrossFit for: 3 years
What are the reasons you do CrossFit?
Health, fitness, sanity and keeping yourself nice. North of 40 the middle-age spread, angst and stresses of life, work and family all seem to conspire against us. Getting down to the gym and blasting it all out with a challenging WOD is a great escape.
Why do you think it is important to continue to exercise?
Continued and improved health and well-being; healthy body, healthy mind and all that. Embrace the challenge; learning new moves or beating personal best is fundamental to keeping that motivation going.
What are the benefits of CrossFit for a master?
Constantly varied, functional fitness. You never know what to expect when you walk through the door, there’s always the challenge of trying to match or compete with those around you, especially the young lads with no shirts on! Ultimately it’s you against you. Great support, both technically and motivationally, from the coaches and other members in the group.
What would you say to other masters who are thinking of starting CrossFit?
Give it a go, whatever your level of fitness or experience there’s a scaling option for you. It’s a completely different environment to any other gym. It’s akin to having your own personal trainer whenever you want at a fraction of the cost.
But the best piece of advice I can offer is; if you’re over 25 and have hairy shoulders, keep your shirt on!
