5 Reasons to start Weightlifting

  1. Fat Burning  – Olympic Weightlifting uses almost every joint and muscle in your body. Research has highlighted that competitive Weightlifters burn as many calories per day as marathoners and have body fat as low as 5%!

  1. Strength + Power -So you want  to be strong and powerful?? Well you’ve picked the right sport! Olympic Weightlifting focuses on explosive movements generating a huge amount of power, combining strength and speed with the barbell.

  2. Mobility / Flexibility -You don’t have to sit and hold static stretches for hours to become more flexible! Weightlifting involves moving through full ranges of movement, developing mobility in the ankles, hips, spine and shoulders. Muscles naturally become more flexible following prolonged periods of resistance through full ranges of motion.

  1. Bone Mineral Density – Spending lots of time under resistance (courtesy of the barbell), is proven to positively impact bone mineral density, making bones stronger and reducing the likelihood of osteoporosis in later life!

At CrossFit Leyland we offer several opportunities every week to develop your Olympic Weightlifting skills, with weekly classes available for both beginners and intermediates. Our beginners class focuses on developing an understanding of the fundamentals of Olympic Weightlifting, including; key positions and movement patterns. These skills also transfer well to the functional movements in our CrossFit classes.

The intermediate weightlifting class caters for those who already have a solid understanding of the positions and movement patterns required to be competent in the clean and jerk and snatch. We have recently changed the format of this class to be less prescriptive and give you guys more time to have fun with the barbell!

Thursday 6:00 am – Intermediates

Thursday 6:30 pm – Intermediates

Thursday 7:30 pm – Beginners

Sunday 9:00 am – Beginners

For members who consider themselves advanced lifters, or are looking for additional support, we offer one to one coaching sessions in which we can provide a greater attention to detail and focus on addressing individual weaknesses.
