Find your tribe

We’ve previously published a blog highlighting a variety of reasons that some of our members choose to CrossFit and the life changing impact that their CrossFit journey has had upon them.  You can read more here > https://crossfitleyland.co.uk/why-do-you-crossfit/.  In this blog, we delve into the importance of finding a gym / ‘box’ / fitness community that shares the same vision and values as yourself, that motivates you to turn up consistently and that supports and educates you throughout your journey.

The great thing about CrossFit is that it is “universally scalable”, or in other words, suitable for all. Any given class, or workout can be adapted and scaled to suit the needs of any individual. Providing the programming scaling options are sufficient and the workout intention clear enough. Any of our WOD’s at CFL should be able to kick the ass of Matt Fraser and Tia-Clair Toomey (should they wish to drop in!) in the same way it does to our masters (over 55’s) members. That is one of the main reasons that you have coaches in your class, advising you and guiding you on scaling options and progressions. One of the other reasons you have coaches with you in class, is to keep you safe and teach you the fundamentals of the movements that we practice. This is where a class based coaching facility and a regular gym differ.

It is worth pointing out, however, that the expectations, standards and ethos in every CrossFit gym or “box” vary considerably. Largely because CrossFit boxes are not franchised, they are affiliated. Consequently, operations and systems aren’t standardised from one box to another.

When embarking upon your fitness journey, it is important to find a gym that suits you, one that supports your goals and provides a suitable training environment in which you feel motivated to turn up regularly. This ultimately comes down to the staff / coaches within each gym, with whom you should feel entirely comfortable placing your trust in, to look out for your safety and best interests. This isn’t something you will get from a bio on a website, or even from well-crafted social media posts. This is only something you get by visiting each box and trying it out for yourself, picking up on the vibe that you get from the staff and from other members. As much as your decisions will be influenced by location / convenience and word of mouth, the decision to join a gym should be based on much more than this and is entirely personal and subjective.

At CFL our vision and values are clear:
